J-bomb says:

“One for the Check-In” came about after some discussions concerning a “J-Bomb solo track” and what else could be included on the P.I.C mixtape project. Next thing I know DJ Mas and Un-G email four tracks to me to consider rhyming over.

One of the tracks Un-G sent was a track he called “Planet Hoth.” It had a driving beat mixed under John Williams’ score to The Empire Strikes Back on it. I wrote some stream-of-consciousness lyrics to go with that track.

However, after a few passes I wasn’t feeling how the lyrics were flowing with the “Planet Hoth” beat. So I tried them on a Carmel Love remix track by Tem called “Carvel Love” that Mas had sent over. I felt that the rhymes fit much better over that track. So after some re-writes I recorded the verse on Tem’s track. Hope you dig it.

Mas says:

“Keep Up (Creepup Remix)” – Tem is a beast. There is very little this man can’t do when it comes to music. A long time ago I gave him a copy of El Nova Hustle and said it would be dope for him to do a remix of one of the tunes. Before I could give him any session files he sends me two mp3s titled: carvel love & creep up

Both remixes were constructed by chopping the living daylights out of the original songs (Carmel Love & Keep Up respectively), adding drums and some mixing. Don’t know how he did it but if he didn’t tell me that’s what he did, I would have had no idea.

That’s how crazy these things are.

I went in and laid down some scratches and the Keep Up remix was complete.

Carvel Love was subsequently given to another talented individual by the name of J-Bomb for the opening song of this mixtape.

Un-G says:

“Down with the Sound” was one of the tracks created on late night drives between San Francisco and LA. At the time, I was working in the Bay on a one year contract with a non-profit. At the end of the week I would drive back down to LA for the weekend.

To keep myself awake on the these 6 1/2 hour drives, I would listen to all sorts of music, envision in my head how I would sample and chop the song up on 16 pads. After that I would loop in my head and figure out choruses and verses. As soon as I got home, I would write and record everything down.

Definitely a fun way to keep yourself awake on the I-5.

“Baby Come Wack” – MDA and I were DJing at our Saturday night spot, playing what ever we wanted. I threw on Player’s “Baby Come Back.” MDA listens for a minute then says “Yacht Rock is dope. Wouldn’t it be cool to put verses on top of these grooves with out really changing the song that much.”

The next day I send MDA “Baby Come Back” with an extended intro. MDA answers back with the track you hear on the mixtape.

“Running with the Numbers” – Micah (of the Jack Lords Orchestra) came to visit me in LA on a stop over to New Zealand. He brought his ukulele along and we started jamming in my living room.

I recorded our session and later on built the blip-ity electronic rhythm section around the song.

Did I mention copious amounts of Maui Wowie and Tanduay rum were also part of the jam session?

Sulu says:

I started making beats with the same musical sensibility as P.I.C, but ended up adding vocal harmony into the mix, and the result is this spin-off project in which I kinda imagined a Star Trek movie where Sulu and his starship Excelsior travel back in time to fix some universal dilemma, and inadvertently becomes the frontman of an Oakland doowop group, The Excelsiors.
